Basic Components of a Safety Light Curtain

 

A safety light curtain primarily consists of two main components: the transmitter and the receiver. The transmitter is equipped with multiple infrared light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that emit a parallel beam of infrared light. The receiver, on the other hand, is fitted with corresponding photodetectors designed to detect whether these light beams are obstructed. The transmitter and receiver are typically installed on opposite sides of the bending machine's working area, forming an invisible light curtain barrier. When an operator's hand or other object enters the light curtain area, part of the light beam is blocked. Upon detecting a signal change, the receiver immediately triggers the safety mechanism.

 

In addition to transmitters and receivers, safety light curtains also include control units. Control units are responsible for processing signals from receivers and linking with the control system of the bending machine. When the light curtain detects an abnormality, the control unit quickly issues a shutdown command to stop or retract the sliding block of the bending machine, thereby ensuring the safety of operators.

 

Working Principle

 

The core principle of the safety light curtain is to trigger protective actions by detecting the interruption of infrared beams. In normal operating conditions, the infrared light emitted by the transmitter is fully received by the receiver, and the system determines a safe state, allowing the bending machine to operate normally. If an object (such as an operator's hand) enters the light curtain area, part of the beam is blocked. The receiver detects a reduction in light intensity or signal loss, and the control unit immediately determines a hazardous state, outputting a signal to stop the bending machine from operating.

 

To enhance reliability, safety light curtains typically employ a multi-beam design. Even if one beam is obstructed, the system can still make a comprehensive judgment based on the status of the other beams, thereby preventing false alarms. Additionally, safety light curtains have extremely short response times, typically in the millisecond range, ensuring that shutdown actions are completed before a hazard occurs.

Compared to traditional mechanical safety devices, safety light curtains offer significant advantages. First, they provide protection without physical contact, avoiding interference with normal operational processes and improving production efficiency. Maintenance and Precautions

 

To ensure the long-term stable operation of the safety light curtain, it is necessary to regularly check whether its optical components are clean to avoid dust or oil stains affecting the transmission of light beams. At the same time, direct exposure of the receiver to strong light should be avoided to prevent interference with signal detection. During installation, it is necessary to ensure that the coverage range of the light curtain can completely protect the hazardous area and avoid blind spots.
